What Exactly Is IMS

During IMS/Dry needling a small sterile needle is used and inserted into a tight band of muscle groups under the skin (trigger point). The needle is then moved around gently to get an involuntary muscle twitch.

Once the needle is removed the muscles relax leading to immediate relief of symptoms. The process is repeated as needed for each of the affected muscle groups.

Although the thought of needles might be frightening, this treatment has led to remarkable results for chronic pain that refuses to go away. IMS is especially useful for soft tissue injuries and neuropathic pain.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN IMS AND TRADITIONAL ACUPUNCTURE

IMS is a modern technique where only a single needle is inserted into the muscle at a given time. The needles are also moved around by the IMS practitioner to target the “knots” (tight muscle bands). The purpose is to directly reduce the muscle tension and tightness at the trigger points where the needle is placed to produce a muscle twitch.

In contrast, acupuncture is a traditional technique of Chinese medicine where needles are inserted into specific areas of the body. Up to  20 to 30 minutes at a time. These insertion points are designed to release qi ( the flow of energy ) through the body. There is usually little or no discomfort after the needles are placed.  You can learn more about acupuncture services he
